Can you treat tile or foam roofs?

Phoenix-area homes have a mix of tile, shingle and foam roofs. Rejuvenation is for only one of them. Here is which one, and why.

No. We treat asphalt shingle roofs only. The product we use is made for the asphalt in shingles, and tile, foam and metal roofs need a different kind of roofer and a different kind of care.

Why it’s shingles only

SoyLei Innovations, the Ames, Iowa company that makes the product we use, puts it plainly: “APEX-1132™ is for asphalt-shingle roof maintenance.” It says nothing about tile, foam or metal.

The treatment is meant to soak into aged asphalt. A concrete or clay tile has no asphalt in it to work on. A foam roof is sprayed urethane foam, and keeping it up is recoat work, a separate trade. Metal roofs are the same story, with no asphalt to soak into. So we don’t spray any of them.

If your roof is tile or foam

Tile roofs need a tile roofer to check the underlayment beneath the tiles. Foam roofs need someone who does foam recoats. We don’t do either, and we’ll tell you so the first time we talk instead of booking a visit that goes nowhere. Our tile and foam roofs page explains what each one needs in more detail.

How to tell what you have

  • Asphalt shingles are flat, overlapping tabs with a gritty, sandpaper-like surface.
  • Tile is thick and heavy, often curved or S-shaped, made of clay or concrete.
  • Foam sits on flat or low-slope roofs as one continuous surface with no separate pieces.

Some homes have more than one, like a shingle roof with a flat foam section over a patio. In that case we would look at the shingle part only.
